Ketju memo: Obol Network

Not approvedPublished by Ketju Research

This memo sets out what the holder owns, who controls it, how holders could lose money, and whether a position can be sold. The advisor decides any client action and amount. Not investment, legal, tax, or compliance advice.

Summary

Ketju does not approve Obol Network: it is middleware for distributed validators (DVT), and it offers clients nothing to deposit into. Its Charon client, and now Pluto, run distributed key generation and threshold signing off-chain. They split an Ethereum validator key across independent operators, so no single operator can make the validator fail. The default Splits and reward contracts cannot be changed, hold no funds and have no admin key. Several independent firms have audited the software, a strong history, and we credit those strengths. A client’s ETH-staking exposure runs through whichever provider adopts Obol, such as Lido or ether.fi, and Ketju judges that exposure in the provider’s memo. The only thing a client can hold is the OBOL token. Its MiCA disclosure says it “does not grant governance powers, enforceable claims, or guarantees of utility,” which conflicts with Obol’s marketing for a related product, “Stake, Govern, and Earn.” We could not reconcile the two, and the token distribution blocks United States persons by location.

Review triggers

  • The conflict between OBOL's MiCA disclaimer of governance rights and the stOBOL "stake, govern, and earn" marketing is resolved and documented
  • A liquid-staking provider Ketju already covers discloses that a current, meaningful share of its validators runs on Obol clusters
  • US-person eligibility for the OBOL token is confirmed, or the token stops mattering to any client's position
  • Obol drops the 2026 push into AI-agent payments, or shows that it adds no new risk to the core DVT infrastructure
